ACG: Tell us about your interest in Physics in school days and how it continued into your twelfth.

Vaishali: I was always interested in Science. Particularly Physics and the answers it provided. Problem solving was not a chore for me and so it was an obvious choice to pick Physics as well as Mathematics in my 12th.

ACG: Were you not swayed by Engineering and Computer Science? What were the options explored after twelfth and what led you to the program and college?

Vaishali: My friends tried their hand at JEE, but I didn’t. I wasn’t keen on going into Engineering and I felt my 12th scores wouldn’t land me a seat in a good Engineering college through counselling. I do not fully recall my mindset at that time, but I remember I chose to study Physics in my degree because I wanted to learn more about the subject and having a degree in Physics was an enticing avenue. I tried the Chennai Mathematical Institute(CMI) and Central University entrance tests with no preparation and admittedly the results weren’t very good. I also applied to different colleges in Chennai and finally got into Women’s Christian College (WCC) in Nungambakkam.

ACG: How were your studies in BSc? Did you have a good peer group to sustain the interest? Did you keep up the interest with independently studying other books on physics or attending talks or videos or lectures in Physics?

Vaishali: I did not aim at getting good scores, which was a mistake in retrospect. However I did pay attention to all the lectures, and tried to attend as many workshops and seminars. I was a part of the department club and helped in organising inter-college contests. WCC had a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere and there were people in my batch who were curious and passionate with whom I could always discuss my doubts or random topics that I found interesting. I also attended JAM (Joint Admission Test, for post-graduate programs in IITs) coaching with a small peer group.

ACG: What was your status after BSc that led you to choose what you did?

Vaishali: I thought there was still a lot to learn, and at that point, I had already considered research as a career, so I did not want to stop after earning my bachelor's degree and instead wanted to pursue a master's. So I tried JAM (Joint Admission test for Masters) and got into NIT, Trichy. Apart from JAM, there are lot more programs for Masters made available by GS (Graduate Studies) exam by Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and

JEST(Joint Entrance Screening Test) exam for Physics by IMSC (institute of mathematical sciences)

ACG: What were the options after MSc?

Vaishali: After MSc, there were a few placement options which were from different sectors (banking, IT). I already had a little research experience doing my project and that solidified my decision to pursue a research career path.. I decided to prepare for competitive exams such as NET (National Eligibility Test), GATE(Graduate Aptitude Test in

Engineering), JEST, GS, BARC-OCES/DGFS (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) and was fixated on getting into a good institute to do PhD. I got a decent GATE score through which I applied to many institutes and tried to attend as many interviews as I possibly can. I got a few acceptances out of which I chose Raman Research Institute in Bengaluru. Although the whole process is not a walk in the park (it is quite stressful at times), I believe anyone who sets their mind on it can do it. The key is consistency and putting trust in the process.

ACG: I heard that the first offer of PhD came from IIT, but you were expecting better options? I.e. IITs were at the bottom of your list? Why?

Vaishali: Although IITs are a good option, from what I’ve heard, research centres/institutes are usually better for research in science. IIT as its name suggests is a place which has its foundation in technology while research institutes usually have environments that cultivate and promote science. Also there’s no fees in research institutes which is aadded bonus.

But ultimately it depends on what the person wants to do in the field, the professor they want to work with and so on.

ACG: For someone who wants to make a career in research, it is a long and hard drawn process as opposed to what happens in an IT industry. Are you aware of the process after PhD?

Vaishali: It is long, but learning should never stop; it’s for a lifetime. Although the money here is less compared to IT or other jobs, I think passion and ambition trump it. To be honest, I’m not aware of all the details of the avenues after a PhD. I know few people who are doing their postdoc abroad and there’s the opportunity to be a lecturer (incredibly difficult to land a good institute in India). People can shift into the industry as well.

ACG: How could you still stay with your research career interest and not get swayed by earning a quick buck and settle down? What is your motivation?

Vaishali: I couldn’t see myself working in an office job for my whole life. In research, I am my own boss – I work on what I like. Also, I always feel immense satisfaction when I conquer a topic or get results (intellectual growth) and I don’t think I will be able to experience that if I had a corporate life. When I feel stressed or when I feel I’m not making any progress, I try to take a step back and look at the big picture. I talk with my friends, indulge in other activities (exercise and music). I believe motivation must come from within, so I try not to burn myself out.
